Flexens is at the forefront of this transition, developing large-scale green hydrogen projects with a focus on producing e-fuels such as ammonia and methanol – fuels that are vital for the maritime industry’s decarbonisation.
In 2023, the EU and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) both set ambitious goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The EU aims for a 55 % reduction by 2030 compared to 1990 levels, while the IMO targets a 20 % decrease in carbon intensity for shipping.
Compared to conventional fuels, e-fuels have significantly lower well-to-wake (WtW) GHG emissions. Therefore, they are ideal for helping the shipping industry meet decarbonisation targets. Furthermore, e-fuels like e-ammonia and e-methanol offer the necessary energy density for long voyages, an essential requirement for maritime operations.
In order to support our first-hand experience in the maritime industry’s decarbonisation, we have taken vital steps toward becoming a key partner in the production of e-fuels or synthetic fuels. Initially, we have invested in research and development in this area. Subsequently, at our Kokkola plant (Finland), we are pioneering green hydrogen and ammonia production in large-scale designed to meet the growing demand for clean maritime fuels.
As the maritime industry navigates the complexities of decarbonisation, we work closely with stakeholders in this sector to deliver comprehensive solutions. Together, we can shape the future of sustainable shipping.
